The upper is one of the highlights for many of our reviewers. Single-layer mesh, padded in all the right spots, and the lockdown is easy to dial in from the get-go. It breathes beautifully, but it still feels secure and snug.
Topo Specter Elite
Topo introduced its first racing shoe with the Topo Specter Elite, and the new model quickly made its way onto our list of best carbon plated shoes.
The midsole is made from springy ATPU RevFoam, creating responsive and energetic landings. The firm carbon fiber plate adds additional energy return, and the aggressive rocker geometry keeps you moving forward in comfort.

HOKA Cielo X1 3.0
While the HOKA Cielo X1 3.0 might still be a big shoe, they actually trimmed down quite a bit of weight from the last version. There’s still a ton of foam underfoot compared to its rivals, and it leans heavily into shock absorption. For marathon runners, that’s a big plus.
If you like an aggressive rocker that moves forward constantly, it’s an addictive shoe.
The grip got a bit of a bump with the compression-molded polyurethane outsole, which holds well in pretty much all conditions. It’s a noticeable step up, particularly on wet pavement.
The upper is more dialed than before as well. There’s actual structure through the midfoot and forefoot now, so it locks in better at higher speeds. And finally (serioously, finally), toothed laces! It might seem like a small detail, but they provide a surprising amount of security for longer races. Considering the fact that most super shoes have them nowadays, it’s a welcome add-on.
HOKA Rocket X 3
Most runners like carbon shoes because they have that “trampoline” feel. HOKA did something a bit different with the Rocket X 3, giving it a more controlled feel.
The midsole is a dual-layer PEBA setup with a carbon plate running through the middle. Really good forward energy here. Like its Cielo cousin, the heel stack is close to 40mm, so you don’t get beat up by late-race landings the way you would in something flatter. With that said, the forefoot runs lower, which keeps toe-offs feeling connected.
Once again, HOKA comes through with the aggressive rocker for that rolling sensation, and there’s a ton of structure to support you along the way, thanks to the carbon plate wings and raised sidewalls.
While the added weight keeps it from being one of the fastest racing shoes out there right now, it still has a solid combo of specs for any long-distance HOKA fans.

At 38 mm / 30 mm with an 8 mm drop, it’s nicely balanced without an aggressive forward push. Puma also finally opened up the narrow fit from earlier versions, with more midfoot room.
