Our Story

Founded in 1975 in a renovated first-floor apartment near Harvard Square, we have grown to 25 retail locations, bringing our unparalleled customer experience to runners, walkers, and fitness enthusiasts across New England.

40 Years and Running

Our story began in earnest in 1992, when Colin Peddie took over the reins of the one-store operation, offering the pioneering concept of bio-mechanical analysis during the shoe selection experience. Word of The Right Fit™ process spread, and soon the store became Cambridge’s very own runner’s hub.

Eager to grow our community, we opened our Wellesley store – “Marathon Sports West” in 1994 – and brought our product knowledge and customer service to the little shop sandwiched between routes 9 and 16.

Since then we’ve grown to 25 total stores, covering the Boston metro area, north and south shores, central and western Mass, and into Connecticut, Rhode Island, and New Hampshire.

New England Partnership

soundRUNNER

In 2013 Marathon Sports added the soundRUNNER brand to our family, gaining a valued partner in Connecticut. soundRUNNER operates four locations – Branford, Fairfield, Glastonbury, and Old Saybrook.

Runner’s Alley

Two years later, we welcomed Runner’s Alley’s three stores – Concord, Manchester, Portsmouth – into the fold. The Runner’s Alley brand is synonymous with New Hampshire running, and the stores remain locally operated under founder and GM Jeanine Sylvester.
