Slip into the Torin ST, and the first thing you’ll notice is how much space your toes get. This isn’t “a little wider than average.” It’s actually wide. The foot-shaped design gives your forefoot room to spread out naturally, which, for a stability shoe, feels great on longer runs.
Underneath, it uses EGO MAX foam, and this version leans softer than before. It absorbs impact well, especially at slower paces, but there’s not much coming back the other way. If you’ve run in something like Altra’s Experience Flow, which has EGO P35, this will feel flatter and a bit less lively. It’s more about protection and support than propulsion.
The support comes from subtle GuideRail technology along the medial side that improves alignment without making the shoe feel too stiff or bulky. They also fixed one of the bigger issues from the last version, with a more padded upper and updated heel shape. Less breakdown, less irritation. The upper, in general, feels built to last, especially around the toe box. Altra clearly went for durability over ventilation, which actually works in its favor when temps drop.
Altra FWD VIA 2
The Altra FWD VIA 2 is a max cushion, neutral running shoe that rivals the Escalante as one of the favorite daily trainers on our list. Unlike the other shoes so far on this list, the FWD VIA 2 features a low 4 mm drop that offers a bit of extra cushioning for soft and plush landings.
The FWD VIA features Altra’s Original FootShape fit, the brand’s widest toe box, making it an ideal choice for runners with wide feet or who prefer a more spacious fit. The 2nd iteration of this shoe also features an updated engineered mesh upper with an extra padded tongue for maximum step-in comfort.
One feature that really stands out in the FWD VIA, especially compared to other Altra shoes, is the high stack height and plush cushioning. The new EGO P35 foam feels remarkably soft under the foot, and the 37 mm/33 mm stack height ensures there’s plenty of foam to carry you through daily miles and long training runs.
Altra Experience Wild 3+
Altra excels in creating both road and trail shoe options, and the Experience Wild 3+ is one of our favorite options when it comes to off-road running or hiking.
The comfort starts from the moment you slide these shoes on, with a cushioned mesh upper, secure fit, and roomy toe box. The redesigned heel keeps the foot securely in place, while the durable toe bumper adds extra protection around the foot when you’re on more technical, debris-heavy trails.
Altra’s EGO P35 foam is one of the brand’s softest and most responsive foam yet, and the Experience Wild 3+ has a generous stack height of this cushioning underfoot. It’s also Altra’s first 4 mm drop trail shoe model, so you can expect a bit more protection under your heel as you move through trails. Finally, with a Vibram Megagrip outsole, you can enjoy maximum traction and grip with each step, helping you feel confident and safe no matter where your adventures take you.
Altra Lone Peak 9+
Altra’s Lone Peak 9+ is a great shoe for adventures on the trail. It’s built to withstand more miles in the great outdoors than its predecessors. While we love the standard Lone Peak, the Lone Peak 9+ features a Vibram Megagrip outsole, providing better all-around grip, no matter what type of terrain you’re trying to tackle.
The Lone Peak 9+’s EGO midsole foam provides responsive cushioning and comfort. The cushioning is balanced so that the heel and forefoot are the same distance from the ground. This helps provide better form and allows your body to move the way it was designed to. The wide-lacing system was also created to allow more natural movement of the foot.
Altra Running has always been known for shaking up the way we think about running shoes. The Lone Peak 9+ continues this tradition with a minimal, barefoot-inspired design. The large toe box allows the feet to sit more naturally within the shoe. The FootShape system was designed to accommodate biological differences in men’s and women’s feet, making this a top trail running shoe for anyone.
Altra Experience Flow 3
Altra built its reputation on zero-drop shoes, so this one going to a 4 mm drop with an actual rocker feels like a philosophy shift (one that we’re actually big fans of). The rocker keeps things moving in a way most Altras don’t. There’s a bit of forward roll that makes for smoother mileage, especially if you’re used to flatter platforms.
Underfoot, you get the famed EGO P35 midsole, which is super light and leans softer than older Altra foams. It’s a little more plush on a side-by-side comparison with Flow Experience 2. But even so, they didn’t kill the energy return.
The upper got cleaned up with a mono mesh build that breathes like mesh gym shorts in July. It’s airy, flexible, and paired with a gusseted tongue for solid hold. And, as Altra does it, there’s plenty of toe box room.
This shoe is for runners who like Altra’s shape but want something that rolls a little easier underfoot.
