Asics Gel-Nimbus 27 Review: Too Soft or Just Right?

When it comes to plush, high-cushion shoes, the Asics Gel-Nimbus has been a consistent fan-favorite among runners. Dating back to 1999, Asics has always boasted cloud-like cushioning and maximum comfort in their Gel-Nimbus running shoe line.

Now on the 27th iteration, the Gel-Nimbus continues to change and adapt to keep up with the latest running shoe competition. The newest version of the shoe, the Gel-Nimbus 27, continues this trend, combining the features people love about the previous versions with a variety of updates and improvements.

While countless runners love the feeling of the max-cushion Gel-Nimbus, there’s no one shoe that works for every single athlete. We’ve put together a complete review of the new Gel-Nimbus 27 so you know exactly what to expect when you slide this shoe on for the first time.

A Closer Look at the Details that Make (or Break) the Asics Gel-Nimbus 27

Specs can help prepare you for what to expect when you put on a shoe for the first time. But it’s hard to know exactly how a shoe will feel on the run without a deep dive into all the key details.

Keep reading for a closer look at all the details that make up this newest version of Asics’ flagship daily trainer.

New and Improved FF Blast Plus Eco Cushioning

Even just looking at the Gel-Nimbus 27, it’s clear that the cushioning is the most prominent feature of this shoe. With a whopping 43.5 mm/35.5 mm stack height in the men’s shoes and 42.5 mm/34.5 mm stack height in the women’s shoes, the massive amount of cushioning is evident from your first step into these shoes.

And while Asics used the same type of foam in the midsole of the Gel-Nimbus 26, they’ve continued to improve on their FF Blast Plus Eco foam to make it softer and lighter than ever. While the previous version of the shoe had a slightly stiffer underfoot feel, especially for a high-cushion shoe, the Gel-Nimbus 27 returns to the cloud-like softness many runners have come to expect from the Nimbus.

The soft and plush underfoot foam provides immediate, out-of-the-box comfort and guarantees lasting protection and softness with every run. Runners who love a soft landing and unparalleled comfort with each step may want to try out this newest version of the Gel-Nimbus.

However, some runners may find this updated cushioning to be too soft underfoot. Our reviewers who prefer a stiffer, more energetic ride found the Gel-Nimbus a touch too soft and lacking bounce and responsiveness.

Asics PureGel Technology

Over the years, Asics has truly made a name for themselves in the running shoe game with their innovative PureGEL technology.

In many of their running shoes, Asics places gel cushioning strategically throughout the midsole to ensure soft landings and improve impact absorption. The Gel-Nimbus 27 has this gel incorporated under the heel to absorb shock and drive a softer ride.

Combined with the cloudlike cushioning, this PureGEL tech makes the newest Gel-Nimbus one of the softest shoes you can find on the market today.

Upper Design and Construction

One of the biggest changes between the Gel-Nimbus 26 and Gel-Nimbus 27 can be found in the upper design and construction. The Gel-Nimbus 26 was made from an engineered knit upper, which, while soft and stretchy around the foot, felt dense and not ventilated to many of our reviewers.

Asics addressed these concerns with a redesign of the upper in the Gel-Nimbus 27. The newest version is made with an engineered jacquard mesh upper. This new construction maintains the softness and stretchiness we loved in previous models, while adding more breathability and ventilation for enhanced comfort in any weather.

Fortunately, Asics did keep the stretchy knit tongue and cushioned heel collar with the newest design, a feature that our reviewers appreciated on long runs. The stretchy tongue effectively stays in place throughout runs and, along with the jacquard upper, provides an adaptive fit that securely wraps the foot so you don’t have to worry about excess movement on runs.

Extra Grip and Durability

High-cushion shoes such as the Gel-Nimbus can often come with a pretty high price tag. So when you’re paying for this extra cushioning and comfort, you want to be sure that you’ll get plenty of use out of the shoes. Luckily, the Asics Hybrid ASICSGRIP outsole ensures longevity and versatility with the Gel-Nimbus 27.

The updated outsole rubber is grippier than ever, so the Nimbus 27 can handle nearly any terrain you throw at it. Our reviewers found that this outsole held up well and kept us feeling secure on runs, even as we tackled snow, ice, and trails.

Along with providing more traction, this durable outsole helps expand the lifespan of the shoe. If you love the feeling of the Gel-Nimbus 27 but are hesitant about the price tag,  you can feel confident that this rubber outsole and durable design will help you enjoy mile after mile in the shoe.

Overall Fit

Our reviewers found that like many of Asics’ running shoes, the Gel-Nimbus 27 fit relatively true to size.

One key difference, however, was in the fit of the toe box. Many Asics shoes run narrow compared to other running shoes, so they’re often less accommodating for different foot shapes. In comparison, our reviewers found that the Gel-Nimbus 27 has a wider fit in the toe box than other Asics models. The wide platform also gives the shoe a more accommodating and roomier fit overall.

Despite the wider fit, many runners may find that the Gel-Nimbus 27 doesn’t have much volume in the upper. Those with high-volume feet may want to consider trying the shoe in a wide width to ensure there’s enough room throughout the shoe.

Reduced Carbon Footprint

Environmentally-conscious runners will be thrilled to hear that with the Gel-Nimbus 27, Asics has taken significant steps to reduce its carbon footprint and make their designs more environmentally-friendly.

24% of the shoe’s midsole foam is made up of bio-based recycled material. The Nimbus 27’s carbon footprint is also 27% less than the industry average, so you can feel good about where you’re spending your money.

The Ultimate Test: Hitting the Road with the Gel-Nimbus 27

While learning about the details and features of the shoe is beneficial, it’s impossible to know how the shoe really feels on runs until we test it out for ourselves.

Our team of reviewers laced up the Gel-Nimbus 27 and took to the road, trail, and track to test the shoe and see how it performs on a range of different runs.

When we first stepped into the shoe, our reviewers were immediately struck by the plushness and max-cushion feel that carried across every part of the shoe. From the colossal amount of cushioning underfoot to the padded heel collar and soft, stretchy tongue and upper, it’s immediately evident that the new Asics Gel-Nimbus design prioritized softness, comfort, and a luxurious step-in feeling.

This whopping 40+ mm of cushioning in the heel made this shoe a great choice for long, slow runs. The cushioning was soft and protective underfoot, offering plenty of shock absorption with each stride. And despite the soft foam, the ultra wide platform helps the shoe feel more stable than comparable soft, high-cushion shoes.

Asics truly shines when it comes to its outsole designs, and the upgraded Hybrid ASICSGRIP rubber outsole is no exception. This rubber outsole carried us through wet pavement, packed dirt trails, and even the slush, snow, and ice of New England Winters. No matter where we went, this outsole traction kept us feeling stable and secure.

The stretchy knit tongue and soft upper also gave the shoe a secure, sock-like fit so you can focus on your run without any excess movement or sliding in your shoes. However, people with wide or high-volume feet may run into trouble with the fit of the upper. Our reviewers found the toe box to fit shallower than other Asics shoes, so anyone in need of more space in the front of their shoes may want to size up or try a wide width.

And while this shoe shines during long runs, some reviewers felt that it lacked versatility and balance during other types of runs. The large amount of cushioning felt great mile after mile, but when you try to pick up the pace, you may run into some challenges with the Gel-Nimbus 27.

The foam is softer than previous iterations, so some runners may find they sink into the foam as they run, requiring more effort to pick up the pace. At 9.3 oz for women’s and 10.8 oz for men’s shoes, the Nimbus is also relatively heavy compared to many of the feather-light shoes you can find in the running shoe market today. Runners who prefer a versatile, lightweight shoe may find the Nimbus 27 too blocky and heavy to serve as an all-around running shoe.

Pros and Cons

Like every running shoe, the Gel-Nimbus 27 has both positives and negatives that come with running in the shoe. Here are a few things to keep in mind if you’re debating the Nimbus as your next running shoe:

Pros

  • Cushioning is plush and soft, offering unmatched comfort during long runs
  • High stack height helps reduce impact on roads and cushion landings mile after mile
  • The wide platform helps the shoe feel stable despite the large amount of soft cushioning
  • Upper design incorporates lots of extra padding around the heel and foot, offering immediate step-in comfort
  • ASICSGRIP outsole improves traction, grip, and durability for long-llasting enjoyment of everything this shoe has to offer

Cons

  • Extra plush cushioning may feel too soft for runners who prefer a bouncier landing
  • Shallow toe box may result in discomfort – runners with wider or more high-volume feet should consider a wide width
  • Can feel heavy and blocky, especially for runners looking for a versatile shoe that can handle faster runs
  • While the shoe feels similar to the Gel-Nimbus 26, the price has increased $5 – up to $165 – from the previous iteration

Who Should Consider Using the Gel-Nimbus 27?

We see all different types of running needs and preferences at Marathon Sports, so we know there isn’t one running shoe that works for everyone. However, there are a few groups of people that may want to consider adding the Gel-Nimbus 27 to their rotation.

While many runners have one all-around shoe to do all their workouts in, most people can benefit from having different shoes for different types of runs and workouts. Those looking for a specific shoe to carry them through long runs and easy days may want to consider trying on the Gel-Nimbus 27.

This soft shoe isn’t the most versatile workhorse shoe, as the soft, squishy foam is less effective when it comes to track workouts or other speed days. But if you want a shoe that will help your body recover and keep your feet and legs feeling good on recovery runs, the Nimbus could be the shoe for you.

The soft foam and excess padding around the entire shoe are designed with this purpose in mind and are guaranteed to keep you comfortable throughout your long runs.

The Nimbus 27 may also be a great option for beginner runners looking to slowly build mileage. When you’re not focusing on speed workouts and just want to get outside and run, a high-cushion shoe like the Gel-Nimbus is a great choice. High-cushion shoes can help you prevent injuries and stay healthy while you slowly and safely build up mileage.

How Does the Gel-Nimbus 27 Compare to Similar Shoes?

The running shoe market is becoming increasingly saturated and competitive these days, with more and more brands releasing impressive lines of running shoes. So with so many options out there, how does Asics’ flagship running shoe model stack up next to its competition?

If you’re looking for a soft, high-cushion shoe, the Gel-Nimbus is one of the best options out there. Asics has consistently released reliable, highly-celebrated running shoes, and as one of their most popular models, the Nimbus is a great choice for long runs or anyone who wants some extra cushioning underfoot.

However, The Gel-Nimbus 27 does lack some versatility that allows runners to easily carry it over from long runs to track workouts. Athletes who want an adaptable, all-around shoe may want to consider the Asics Superblast 2. At nearly $200, the Superblast has a higher price tag than the Nimbus. But with a high stack height of light and responsive foam and a lightweight design, many loyal Asics lovers may find this shoe more versatile than the Gel-Nimbus 27.

Those who love lots of soft cushioning but prefer a more accommodating fit may want to try out the New Balance 1080 v14. With a 38 mm/32 mm stack height, the 1080 v14 boasts plenty of soft, plush foam underfoot on runs. Despite having a high stack of cushion underfoot, the 1080 maintains a sleek and lightweight design that makes it a more versatile high-cushion option than the Nimbus. It’s also available in standard, wide, and extra wide widths to accommodate more foot types and shapes.

Runners who want the benefit of lots of cushioning without the overly soft and squishy foam should consider testing out the Hoka Skyflow. The midsole is made up of a supercritical EVA foam that offers more bounce and energy return than most standard high-cushion shoes. While both the Skyflow and Nimbus are fantastic options for long runs, those looking for an all-around shoe may prefer the stiffer, bouncier feeling of the Skyflow.

And while the Gel-Nimbus 27 does have a wide platform for extra stability, it’s a neutral shoe that doesn’t offer any corrective support for overpronation. Runners who like the soft upper and high-cushion design but need a bit more support should try out the Asics Gel-Kayano 31.

Asics Gel-Nimbus 27: Final Verdict

The Asics Gel-Nimbus has been a staple in the brand’s running shoe line for years, and with the newest iteration, Asics proves that the model has earned a spot as one of their most renowned and popular running shoes.

While the Nimbus has undergone some significant changes over the years, the Gel-Nimbus 27 incorporates much of what countless runners love about the shoe while adding some changes and upgrades for an even better running experience.

The Gel-Nimbus is touted as a high-cushion shoe that’s perfect for long runs, and after testing the shoe on a variety of runs, our reviewers couldn’t agree more. The updated foam formula gives the shoe a soft and luxurious underfoot feel, while the extra touches such as the stretchy tongue and ankle padding keep our entire foot securely wrapped and locked in mile after mile.

The Gel-Nimbus 27 excels as a recovery day or long run shoe – but anyone who wants a shoe that can do it all may want to look elsewhere. On speedier runs, the combination of the excess cushioning, soft foam, and heavy design held us back and kept us from easily picking up the pace. We found that overall, the Gel-Nimbus 27 thrives in long runs but doesn’t hold up as well during other workouts.

This review can give you a good idea of what to expect with the Gel-Nimbus 27, understand how Asics has changed and updated the model, and know how the shoe stacks up against competitors. But the best way to truly understand how the shoe feels is to stop by your local Marathon Sports.
