The Saucony Endorphin Speed has consistently made our list of the best uptempo training shoes. Over the first 5 iterations, it has become a fan favorite, offering a versatile, snappy ride that can handle any uptempo run.
Now, with the Endorphin Speed 6, Saucony is expanding on the shoe’s legacy. With more cushioning, a redesigned nylon plate, and a brand-new foam, the 6th iteration takes the Endorphin Speed to the next level.
Our review team was very familiar with the Endorphin Speed line, with several team members having used previous iterations for uptempo runs, interval workouts, and even some racing. So we were excited to see what the Endorphin Speed 6 had to offer. Throughout this Saucony Endorphin Speed 6 review, we’ll dive into all the details – both established and new – to help you decide if it’s the right fit for your running journey.

A Closer Look: Endorphin Speed 6 Key Features and Highlights
Now that you know the specs and numbers behind the Endorphin Speed, let’s dive into all the features and how they play out in this newest Saucony speed shoe.
PWRRUN PBX Midsole Foam
With a new midsole compound – PWRRUN PBX – Saucony manages to add more cushioning and protection underfoot while reducing overall weight.
The Endorphin Speed 5 relied on PWRRUN PB in the midsole, which, while comfortable and responsive, quite frankly, lacked the pop and propulsion we want in a speedy trainer. Luckily, the new PWRRUN PBX foam brings this energy, delivering more bounce and propulsion in a lightweight package.
Nylon Plate
The foam isn’t the only element of the Endorphin Speed’s midsole that saw some upgrades. While the model has always featured a nylon plate, the Endorphin Speed 6’s plate was redesigned, using a new fluted construction for more pop and propulsion.
The redesigned nylon plate offers a fun, uptempo ride, without the aggressive, rigid underfoot feel that comes with a full carbon plate. There’s lots of versatility here, with enough spring and bounce to pick up the pace without feeling unnatural or unstable during longer, easier mileage.
SPEEDROLL Geometry
The Endorphin Speed is widely recognized as one of the original super trainers, meaning it borrows elements from super shoes while maintaining more durability, versatility, and comfort for everyday runs.
One element the Endorphin Speed incorporates from its race-day counterparts is the pronounced SPEEDROLL rocker profile. This curved sole enhances your momentum with every step for effortless transitions. Paired with an 8 mm drop, you can expect soft, protected heel landings, with a smooth roll forward into the energetic toe-off.
Performance-Oriented Upper & Overall Fit
A lightweight mesh upper construction keeps your feet cool, comfortable, and secure as you pick up the pace. It’s remarkably breathable, ensuring there’s plenty of airflow in any weather condition.
In the past, this model has featured a more snug, performance-focused fit. And while there’s still a secure lockdown around the heel and midfoot, the Endorphin Speed 6 has more width and volume in the toe box to accommodate more foot shapes and sizes.
Versatility & Durability
The good news with super trainers like the Endorphin Speed 6 is there’s a lot more adaptability and versatility compared to standard daily trainers or carbon-plated super shoes. The responsive midsole helps you efficiently pick up the pace during workouts or interval runs. And when you’re heading out for long runs, the high stack height and smooth geometry come into play to provide shock absorption and forward momentum.
You can also expect plenty of value for your money thanks to the reliable XT-900 outsole. This rubber offers plenty of grip and longevity without weighing you down during faster efforts.
Road Test Results: The Endorphin Speed in Action
While the Endorphin Speed has always been a top choice for tempo runs, our review team found a few areas that could use improvement in the shoe’s 5th iteration. Even with these drawbacks, it was a go-to for me when I wanted a light, snappy shoe to help me pick up the pace. So I was excited to test out the Endorphin Speed 6 and see how Saucony improved on its already winning formula.

One of the biggest complaints I and other runners found with the Endorphin Speed 5 was that it lacked the pop and energy found in other uptempo trainers on the market. It was responsive, but didn’t always give enough propulsion for dedicated speed workout days.
I’m happy to report that it seems Saucony heard this feedback and upped the speed, propulsion, and energy return in the Endorphin Speed 6.
The new foam was an immediate standout when heading out for some tempo miles. The PWRRUN PBX made the shoe feel lighter, springier, and more dynamic than ever before. One reviewer noted that the newest version of the Speed was “an incredible step up. The upgraded PWRRUN PBX cushion created a bouncier, softer, and lighter ride compared to prior iterations…I’d easily recommend this to anyone wanting a fast, plated trainer without sacrificing comfort.”
The redesigned nylon plate added some extra energy return underfoot, creating a bouncy ride with some mild firmness and stability. Even the SPEEDROLL technology was more aggressive and noticeable through each stride. Through each heel-to-toe transition, there was smooth, effortless forward guidance and momentum.
However, with this upgrade being one of the fastest, most responsive versions of the shoe yet, some athletes may find it’s less versatile than its predecessors. On casual, easy runs, the foam and plate combination felt relatively stiff underfoot. There’s still plenty of foam, with a 38/30 mm stack height, and the shoe can definitely handle a wide range of paces and distances. But for those who prefer softer landings for long runs, this updated Endorphin Speed may feel too firm.
While the ride itself is more performance-oriented than before, I did find that the upper and fit shifted away from a high-performance feel to prioritize comfort and cushioning. The mesh is incredibly lightweight and breathable, with a gusseted tongue that keeps everything locked in place during high-intensity workouts. Putting the Endorphin Speed 5 on one foot and the Endorphin Speed 6 on the other, it was clear that they also opened up the toe box for a wider, more accommodating fit.
While there was more width than in the past, some of our review team did find that the length was a bit short. If you’re between sizes, you may want to consider sizing up in the Endorphin Speed 6.
Overall, the Endorphin Speed is a great option for anyone looking for a single, do-it-all shoe that you can take from training days to race days. It’s not a super soft, plush training shoe, so you can easily pick up the pace or use it for daily mileage. The nylon plate also offers more flex than carbon plated racing shoes, making it a less aggressive, more affordable race day option.
Endorphin Speed 6 Pros and Cons
Our review team was ecstatic to see Saucony make some key changes to the Endorphin Speed to deliver a lighter, more propulsive uptempo shoe that a huge range of athletes can enjoy. But even with all these improvements, every shoe has a few downsides to consider. Here are the pros and cons to keep in mind when deciding on your next running shoe.
Pros
- New PWRRUN PBX cushioning creates a responsive, energetic ride while reducing weight and bulk
- Nylon plate uses an updated fluted, slotted design to deliver more spring and bounce in each step, without feeling overly rigid and stiff
- SPEEDROLL geometry creates smooth transitions for more efficiency and speed during uptempo runs
- Soft, lightweight upper is secure and breathable around the foot, and the wider last creates a more accomodating fit to suit more foot shapes and sizes
Cons
- Midsole may feel too stiff underfoot for those who prefer softer landings
- Rubber outsole is strategically placed to protect early wear, particularly in the forefoot, but limited coverage in the heel may cause it to wear down faster
The Endorphin Speed 6 vs Comparable Shoes: How Does it Stack Up?
Uptempo training shoes are becoming increasingly popular, and our team was happy to see the Endorphin Speed 6 make some necessary upgrades to keep up with the growing competition. But in a time when these fast training shoes are becoming lighter, faster, and more energetic, how does the more established Endorphin Speed stack up?
Like the Endorphin Speed, the Asics Sonicblast 2 borrows some race day shoe elements to create a speedy, energetic training shoe. ASTROPLATE technology incorporates a Pebax plate in the midsole, boosting energy return while maintaining some flexibility. It also has a higher stack height, boasting 46/38 mm of foam for men’s shoes and 45/37 mm for women’s shoes.
This higher stack height results in extra shock absorption on long runs, so you can enjoy a bit more versatility. But at $190, it’s also the pricier option compared to the Endorphin Speed at $175.
Want a lighter, more flexible ride? Check out the adidas Evo SL. The Evo SL is one of the most popular speed trainers around, rivaling the Endorphin Speed in terms of bounce, energy return, and versatility. The Evo SL is non-plated, so you can enjoy a bit more softness and flexibility underfoot.
However, without a plate, the Evo SL’s ultra-bouncy foam can feel wobbly and unstable, especially during everyday mileage. While it’s incredibly lightweight, those who prefer more structure and support may want to stick with the Endorphin Speed.
The Finish Line: Who Should Try the Endorphin Speed 6?

Uptempo trainers like the Endorphin Speed 6 are a great choice for lots of athletes. The Endorphin Speed 6 can take the place of a complicated, pricey shoe rotation, offering a do-it-all option that can take you from everyday miles to uptempo workouts to race day.
However, despite its versatility, not everyone is going to like the Endorphin Speed 6’s plated, propulsive feel. The new, responsive foam and nylon plate combination lends itself to a firmer feel underfoot that won’t work for those who prefer plush, soft landings.
Ultimately, there’s no perfect shoe for every runner, walker, and gym-goer.
