New Supercritical Midsole Construction
One of the biggest changes in the newest version of the Speedgoat is the construction of the midsole unit. The Speedgoat 7 shifts away from the standard EVA foam and instead incorporates a large amount of supercritically-formed EVA foam.
This new foam was infused with nitrogen, giving it an airier, lighter, and livelier feel than the usual proprietary foam. And with a high stack of this supercritical cushioning – 37 mm in the heel and 32 mm in the forefoot – the Speedgoat offers its softest and most responsive ride yet.
This chunky midsole offers lots of energy, shock absorption, and protection, which was much appreciated on more technical, debris-heavy terrain. However, Hoka still managed to keep the shoe feeling grounded and stable with a low-profile cushion bed.
The active foot frame and low-profile design allows your foot to sit inside the midsole cushion, keeping it closer to the ground so you don’t feel unstable or wobbly as you tackle more technical trails. Between this unique footbed design and the more responsive cushioning, the Speedgoat 7 keeps you comfortable and secure no matter what type of trails you’re on.
Vibram Outsole and Traction Lugs
The Speedgoat was originally designed for ultra running on technical terrain, so grip and traction is a crucial element in any update.

The Vibram Megagrip outsole with 5 mm traction lugs offers exceptional grip that stays consistent and reliable on any trail. And while Hoka stuck with the tried-and-true Vibram outsole, the Speedgoat 7 does feature some minor changes to the lug pattern. The grippy traction lugs were upgraded to a broader orientation, offering more versatility and aggressive traction on mixed terrain.
Woven Upper Design
Around the top of the foot, the Speedgoat 7 relies on a refined RPET woven textile upper to deliver a secure fit with plenty of ventilation and breathability.
The woven material is lightweight and provides a snug and secure fit to limit excess movement as you venture through trails and steep elevation changes. The tongue is thin and lays flat around the top of the foot, with a dual-gusset design to stop debris from getting in the shoe.
While the upper itself is light and thin, the heel collar has been redesigned with some extra padding. This cushioning in the back of the shoe helps lock your feet in place, all while providing maximum comfort and support over the course of long runs or hikes.
Gaiter Compatibility
The Speedgoat 7’s upper works to prevent rocks and debris from getting in the shoe, but Hoka also added more protection options with a new gaiter compatible design.

Shoe Geometry and Construction
While the shoe features a high stack of foam, Hoka uses some unique geometric features and design choices to keep you feeling stable and grounded throughout offroad adventures.
First, the active-foot frame and low-profile design is paired with a low 5 mm heel-to-toe offset. This relatively low drop keeps your feet in a natural position as you walk or run, which balances the benefits of high cushion shoes with the stability of feeling the ground underneath your feet.
Next, the Speedgoat 7 has a wide platform, which works with the responsive foam to create a sturdy base on uneven terrain.
Like all Hoka shoes, the Speedgoat 7 also features an active rocker profile. The curved sole pushes you through every stride, rolling you from heel-to-toe to keep you moving forward with smooth transitions.
Trail Test Results
Normally, we’ll take shoes out for a road test to see how they perform during different types of runs. But the Speedgoat 7 was designed for technical terrain, so we took the shoes for a variety of runs and walks off-road for better insight into how the traction, cushioning, and other features feel on different trail adventures.
Living in New England, our review team is fortunate enough to have all kinds of trails and mountains to explore. And the Speedgoat 7 really excelled when we tested them out on more technical mountainous terrain with steep elevation changes.
The Vibram Megagrip outsole was able to really shine in this more technical terrain. Scrambling over rocks, leaves, and occasional icy patches, the aggressive lug design and grippy outsole didn’t disappoint. From runs to hikes through the woods, the Speedgoat 7 kept us feeling secure with each landing.
Another major standout was the new supercritical foam. While the Speedgoat has felt comfortable and cushioned in the past, the previous EVA foam didn’t deliver the pop and energy we often look for when we’re picking up the pace. Luckily, the new nitrogen-infused foam took the Speedgoat 7 to the next level.
The foam felt softer underfoot with more energy return and liveliness in every step. Simply put, the shoe was more fun to run in than previous versions, all while maintaining the reliability and comfort we’ve come to expect.
One area of concern was how the high stack height would feel on uneven surfaces. Large amounts of foam can often feel wobbly or unstable, and when it comes to trail running, this stability is crucial.
However, our concerns were put to rest after a few test runs in the Speedgoat 7. The high stack height felt great underfoot and helped absorb impact during longer trail runs, but paired with the low-profile design, active foot frame, and low drop, we were able to feel the ground beneath our feet and enjoy the balance of protection and stability.
It was clear after trying the Speedgoat on a range of different trails and gravel paths that the shoe has truly earned its reputation as one of the best in the trail running world. Between the dependable grip, well-balanced cushion, and stable design, we didn’t have many complaints about this Hoka update.
However, one area that may not work for every runner is the fit and upper design. The woven upper is comfortable and breathable, but it has a snug fit that hugs the foot and doesn’t offer much wiggle room. While some runners and hikers may like this secure lock-down, those who prefer a wider toe box or more accommodating fit may find it causes some rubbing or hot spots throughout longer runs or hikes.
Overall, there was a lot to love about the newest Speedgoat. Hoka first designed the shoe to help runners fly through tough trails, and the newest update continues to serve this purpose, providing all the grip, support, and comfort you need for any offroad adventure.
Pros and Cons

The Speedgoat 7 is also tapered in the front, and the snug upper may feel too tight in the toe box for runners who need a more accommodating shoe.
