The Mizuno Wave Rider is one of the brand’s most iconic running shoes. It’s a favorite daily trainer among all levels of runners and is known for its cushioning and responsiveness.
With the release of the Wave Rider 30, Mizuno introduces a redesigned layered ENERZY NXT midsole. The nitrogen-infused EVA midsole delivers a softer, bouncier feel directly under the foot, with enhanced energy return to carry you comfortably through your daily mileage. Closer to the ground, a traditional EVA layer creates firm, stable landings.
The latest version also sees a slight increase in stack height, now measuring 42.5 mm in the heel and 34.5 mm in the forefoot. This results in a more moderate 8 mm heel-to-toe drop, down from the previous model’s 10 mm.
A lighter-than-ever knit upper improves breathability and airflow while delivering a snug, secure fit. The iconic MIZUNO WAVE plate continues to disperse impact evenly for a stable ride, although it’s now full-length for more responsive toe-offs, and the durable X10 outsole ensures long-lasting traction and wear resistance.

Some runners don’t feel the need to buy a clever shoe. They just want something neutral that’s just as good for long-distance running as it is for a daily jog.
The midsole is massive (around 44 mm in the heel) and built with a dual setup of nitrogen-infused ENERZY NXT over an EVA-based layer. The step-in feels soft, almost pillowy, and it absorbs impact extremely well, especially if you land toward the back of the shoe. The platform is wide enough that it stays stable, even with all that foam.
What stood out to us more than anything is how protective it feels. There’s not much in terms of rebound, but that’s not what people are really looking for in this shoe.
On top, Mizuno uses what they call their Smooth Stretch Woven upper, which provides a secure, non-restrictive wrap. It’s plenty breathable for warm-weather runs and feels pretty durable.
For most runners, the Wave Sky 9 will get the job done.
Mizuno Wave Inspire 22
This Wave Inspire was once an old-school stability shoe with a big medial support system. For version 22, it’s more subtle. The current support comes from the Wave plate, which acts as more of a stride guide than anything.
Mizuno also dropped the offset from 12 mm to 10 mm and switched to ENERZY NXT foam, which gives it a slightly softer feel than older versions.
Weight dips just under that usual stability-shoe threshold at around 9.9 oz on a men’s size 9,which is a nice change. It doesn’t feel fast, but it’s easier to move in than most shoes in this category.
The stability is solid through the rearfoot and midfoot. The platform feels planted, especially if you’re a heel striker. Many of our reviewers pointed out the flex in the forefoot as well, which reduces some of the potential rigidity it could have as a stability shoe.
Mizuno Wave Horizon 9
The Wave Horizon series has always been Mizuno’s “throw everything at it” stability shoe. With a wide base, layered foams, a wave plate, and extra structure, there has long been a lot to it. There still is, but now it actually runs better.
The midsole does most of the heavy lifting with a top layer of ENERZY NXT sitting over a firmer ENERZY base, for a soft but not mushy landing. It actually moves pretty quickly for a shoe that weighs as much as it does.
As for stability, the wave plate, wide platform, and a subtle medial sidewall all work together.
The fit runs a bit wider than before and provides more than enough volume in the toebox. The upper also feels durable, though some of our reviewers have noted the inner lining can be a little rough if you’re not wearing good socks.
It’s still a big shoe. You feel the size, especially on tighter turns. But for long runs or anyone who needs good support, this is one of the better options out right now.
