Best for Daily Training: HOKA Clifton 11
A daily trainer is a runner’s go-to shoe for their everyday workouts. A quality daily trainer is typically durable, lightweight, comfortable, and cushioned. The Clifton is one of HOKA’s most popular shoes, and this year’s edition, the Clifton 11, is better than ever.
The Clifton features a high stack of cushioning while maintaining a fairly lightweight construction, weighing 9.97 ounces for men’s shoes and 8.3 ounces for women’s. The compression-molded EVA foam is plush yet responsive, and the smooth MetaRocker geometry makes for effortless transitions.
Our reviewers agree that the Clifton 11 is more comfortable than all previous versions, offering a comfortable, smooth, and cushioned ride. In addition to being one of the best HOKA running shoes, they praised it as an ideal walking shoe or everyday sneaker for anyone seeking a cushioned running shoe, providing unparalleled comfort.
Best for Speed Days: HOKA Mach 7
The HOKA Mach 7 kept much of what runners loved about previous iterations. This newest version maintains a lightweight feel, responsive ride, and snug fit, all while packing in a high stack of bouncy EVA foam underfoot. As a speed shoe, the Mach 7 is incredibly lightweight, with men’s shoes weighing an average of 8.37 oz and women’s weighing an average of 7.15 oz.
This is a hybrid workout and race shoe for those looking for a snug, secure, distraction-free fit. It features a speed-centric gusseted tongue and mild heel collar padding. The airy creel jacquard mesh upper is secure and comfortable while reducing weight and maximizing breathability.
While this version boasts plenty of foam and a relatively high stack height, the shoe gives an overall nimble feel with its stable midfoot and snappy forefoot rocker design. This shoe is best for roads and our reviewers find it to be versatile and natural-feeling, despite its narrower fit. It has some of the best midsole geometry for speed and propulsion compared to other HOKA shoe models, making it a great choice for picking up the pace.
Best for Cushioning: HOKA Bondi 9
HOKA is known for cushioned running shoes, and the Bondi 9 is loaded with some of the industry’s lightest and softest foams. It also features a new heel geometry that’s extended for softer landings and smoother transitions. The Bondi 9’s rearfoot-focused Active Foot Frame also offers impact protection and a bouncy, energetic ride.
The HOKA Bondi 9 features plush cushioning for runners who enjoy a soft, energetic ride. It functions well as an everyday trainer with a breathable upper and plush memory foam collar for optimal comfort mile after mile.
Our reviewers appreciated that the Bondi 9 is spacious for wider feet and extremely shock-absorbent. It’s a viable option for runners with plantar fasciitis, joint pain, or injuries that require a softer, more plush ride.
Best for Stability: HOKA Arahi 9
You’d pick up the Arahi 9 and expect it to feel heavy. It doesn’t. That’s the first surprise.
There’s a lot of shoe here, but even with the stack and added padding, it still comes across pretty light on foot.
The heel cushioning is a noticeable improvement over the Arahi 8. It’s softer on impact and more protective, especially if you’re a heel striker. The smooth, protective landing is aided by the Early-Stage Meta Rocker, which has a beveled heel and forefoot that curves a bit earlier. It’s a holy roller of a shoe.
In terms of stability, the H-Frame system provides well-balanced support along the medial and lateral sides of the feet without feeling too firm or rigid. It’s a true overpronator’s dream. The fit is a little more forgiving this time around too. There’s more room in the toe box than in previous versions, which makes it easier to wear for all-day use.
It’s a shoe that covers all the bases. Running, walking, and daily wear. Comfortable enough for all of it, with enough support for beginners.
Best for Racing: HOKA Rocket X 3
This HOKA Rocket X 3 goes all-in on the setup here. You get dual layers of PEBA foam with a full-length carbon plate in between, and we’re big fans of the combination. It’s responsive, but not unstable like some supershoes can be. There’s a firmness from the plate that feels controlled, especially once you’re a few miles in and your form starts to fade.
The rocker is aggressive. If you like that rolling sensation where the shoe kind of carries you forward, this does it well.
There’s also a ton of cushioning under the heel. The stack comes in just under the legal road race limit at 39.6 mm, and it’s pretty noticeable on longer efforts. It softens impact in a way that helps if you’re someone who deals with heel discomfort, and it pairs nicely with the slightly higher drop for heel strikers.
What’s surprising is how durable it feels for a supershoe. Most carbon-plated models feel like they have a short lifespan. This one holds up better than most in that category, which makes it a more realistic option for marathon training instead of just race day.
Best for Trail Running: HOKA Speedgoat 7
If you run trails, you already know this name. The grip is the first thing to look at on the Speedgoat 7. Vibram Megagrip with those 5 mm lugs seems to stick to everything. We love a shoe that almost takes the thought out of footing, which is kind of what you want on technical terrain.
Underfoot, HOKA finally updated the midsole with a supercritical EVA foam, and it’s a noticeable step up. The old versions could feel a bit flat. This one has a little life to it, on longer miles. You still get that high-stack protection (around 37 mm in the heel) so rocks won’t beat you up, but there’s also just enough ground feel to stay in control.
The upper is more dialed-in this time too, with a softness in the heel and more structure in the midfoot. The one thing to watch is the fit up front. It still runs a bit narrow in the toe box, especially compared to some other trail options. Not a dealbreaker, but worth knowing.
Best for All-Terrain Running: HOKA Challenger 8
The HOKA Challenger 8 is another trail runner, but offers more versatility geared towards all-terrain runs that take you from road to trail.
Like the Speedgoat 7, the Challenger features a high stack of compression-molded EVA foam to absorb impact and protect you out on both roads and technical terrain. This soft foam is designed for easy transition across all types of terrain, so the Challenger can accompany you no matter where your runs or walks take you.
The secret to this versatility is in the lightweight durabrasion rubber outsole. With reliable grip and multi-directional 4mm lugs, the Challenger delivers confidence and security with every step. The extended heel pull and breathable engineered mesh upper add even more benefits, keeping every part of your foot comfortable throughout your workouts.
The Challenger is an ideal all-terrain shoe for the runner who likes to do it all. Whether you stick to roads, venture onto dirt paths, or tackle difficult trails, the Challenger 8 will keep you feeling safe and comfortable with every step.
