Asics GT-2000 15 Review: A Classic & Stable Go-To Trainer

For years and years, Asics running shoes have been constructed around a Kaizen design philosophy. This Japanese term means “continuous improvement,” and the brand applies this principle to each running shoe model it creates.

The Asics GT-2000 15 is just the latest example of this design philosophy in action. The GT-2000 dates back to 2012 when it was first released as a performance stability shoe for overpronators. Since then, each new iteration of the shoe has incorporated new design elements and technologies for the best possible running experience.

Now on its 15th iteration, the GT-2000 has become a go-to for runners, walkers, and anyone looking for support and versatility.

Wondering how the newest version of the shoe adapts and improves, and what it maintains from previous iterations? At Marathon Sports, we had the same questions. So as soon as these new Asics stability shoes came through our doors, it was time to put them to the test for the best possible understanding of how they perform.

Going Beneath the Surface: A Deep Dive Into the GT-2000 15

Ready to learn more about all the elements, both old and new, the GT-2000 15 has to offer? Here’s a closer look at all the key features and technologies that make this model a top choice for anyone looking for comfort and support.

FF BLAST MAX Cushioning

Like the GT-2000 14, the newest iteration features a midsole made up of FF BLAST MAX foam. However, this energetic foam has been fine-tuned to feel even softer underfoot, delivering an ideal blend of cloud-like softness and responsiveness.

The 15th iteration also upped the stack height to 38/30 mm for men’s shoes and 37/29 mm for women’s. This is up 2 mm from the previous iteration. While the shoe still falls in the moderate cushioned range, this additional soft foam creates more shock absorption and all-around comfort with every step of a run.

A Trampoline Pod – a bouncy, spring-like design in the forefoot – works with the cushioning for maximum energy return and explosive toe-offs.

3D Guidance System

If you’ve spent some time researching running shoes, you’ve likely come across the terms “stability shoes” and “neutral shoes”. But what does that actually mean? And where does the GT-2000 fall?

While you can learn more about neutral vs stability shoes in our complete running shoe guide, the short answer is that stability shoes provide corrective support for those who overpronate, meaning their arches and ankles roll inward excessively on runs. Neutral shoes, on the other hand, are more flexible and don’t correct your gait and alignment.

The GT-2000 is a stability shoe, using a unique, holistic 3D Guidance System to reduce overpronation.

This Guidance System incorporates several different components to improve alignment, including a wide base, flared platform, heel bevel, and strategic midsole geometry. These elements combine to deliver adaptive stability that can benefit both mild and moderate overpronators.

PureGEL Technology

PureGEL is a defining technology in many of Asics’ most well-established and renowned training shoes. While the gel construction has changed and adapted over the years, the soft gel has consistently delivered plush landings and exceptional shock absorption.

In the GT-2000 15, the PureGEL is integrated into the rearfoot cushioning. As you land, this added cushioning absorbs shock and impact to keep you comfortable and feeling your best on any run.

New Engineered Woven Upper

One of the biggest upgrades in the newest GT-2000 is the upper design and construction. While previous iterations used a padded mesh, the new engineered woven material is lighter, breathable, and more flexible than before, all without sacrificing cushioning and comfort.

The upgraded material adapts to your feet’s natural movement, balancing out the midsole’s structure and support. The light padding around the heel and tongue provides a secure lockdown and maximum step-in comfort while maintaining the shoe’s sleek, nimble profile.

The flexible material also helps promote a more accommodating fit for all different foot shapes and sizes. The shoe itself has a narrow, tapered fit, but this material provides a soft, adaptive wrapping around the foot. And for those who need a bit more space, the GT-2000 15 is also available in both a standard and wide width.

Versatility & Durability

Typically, as shoes increase the amount of cushioning, they lose some versatility and adaptability. One of the upsides with the GT-2000 is that, while the stack height does increase, it maintains a versatile design that can easily carry you from uptempo runs to long recovery runs. This adaptability stems from the balanced cushioning, energetic trampoline-inspired construction, and lightweight design.

The shoe is geared towards overpronators, but we also think the subtle 3D Guidance system is mild enough for both neutral runners who want a bit of extra support and mild-to-moderate overpronators. It didn’t feel oversupportive for neutral members of our review team, and has stable landings that runners and walkers of all gaits can appreciate.

Finally, Asics ensures you can enjoy all the features this shoe has to offer for longer due to a new and improved outsole design. An AHAR LO rubber covers key areas of the sole to prevent early wear, while a high abrasion-resistant rubber heel plug adds another layer of protection. Along with improving durability, this outsole rubber combination provides effective grip and traction, even in wet and slippery weather conditions.

Asics GT-2000 15: Road Test Results

The GT-2000 has a long history in the running shoe world, so our team couldn’t wait to lace up the 15th iteration and take it for a spin.

As we took them out of the box and slid them on, the new upper was the immediate standout. The mesh upper used in the GT-2000 14 was replaced with a new woven material, which gave the shoe a lighter, much more breathable feel.

The lightness was apparent as we headed out for a variety of different runs. The newest GT-2000 weighs just 8.8 oz for men’s shoes and 7.8 oz for women’s shoes – down from 9.5 oz and 8.4 oz in the previous iteration. Stability shoes have a history of feeling heavy and bulky, so we were happy to see Asics deliver a sleek training shoe that doesn’t sacrifice comfort, cushioning, and support.

On long runs, the difference in softness and cushioning was evident. The foam felt softer than ever underfoot, and paired with the PureGEL technology in the heel, every landing felt soft, spongy, and bouncy.

We even put the 14th version on one foot and the 15th on the other for a direct side-by-side comparison. This made the reformulated FF BLAST MAX foam and 2 mm of extra cushioning even more apparent. On daily miles, recovery days, and long runs, we really appreciated the plush padding and extra impact protection.

The subtle, adaptive support was another great touch. The 3D Guidance System isn’t particularly firm or overcorrective. Instead, it moves with the feet and provides subtle arch support when needed. Neutral runners on our team didn’t feel the shoe was restrictive, and mild overpronators enjoyed the flexible stability.

However, runners or walkers with more support needs may want to consider another option. Asics has been shifting towards more subtle, holistic support in their stability shoes in recent years. While this form of support is more versatile and works for a wide range of runners, it may not be the best choice for those who prefer more aggressive support.

The GT-2000 is advertised as a daily trainer, so we weren’t surprised that the shoe excelled during these casual, everyday miles. But we also tested the shoes out on more uptempo runs and speed workouts for a complete picture.

As far as stability shoes go, the GT-2000 15 is one of the most versatile options around. It’s light and low profile, and despite the softer foam, the shoe maintains a bouncy, responsive, well-balanced ride. Throughout runs with faster intervals, the GT-2000 allowed us to pick up the pace without feeling heavy, clunky, or unnatural.

It wouldn’t be our top choice as a dedicated speed or track workout shoe, due to the sheer amount of foam and soft heel landings from the PureGEL. But if you want a single stability shoe that can easily handle a wide variety of runs, the newest GT-2000 is a great choice.

And while we still have plenty more miles to put on these shoes, we’re impressed so far with the shoe’s updated outsole design when it comes to versatility and durability. We haven’t had any traction issues during rainy and slippery summer runs, and the AHARLO and AHARPLUS rubber combination seems to be holding up well after our range of runs.

Pros and Cons

No shoe is perfect for every runner. Each new model – no matter the new technology and innovation – has some features that may not work for everyone.

Here are a few pros and cons to consider in the GT-2000 15.

Pros

  • New woven upper is a big improvement, creating a secure fit with superior breathability and ventilation
  • Reformulated FF BLAST MAX foam is softer and lighter than before for a soft, smooth ride during daily miles
  • +2 mm of foam in both the heel and forefoot works with the PureGEL rearfoot technology for exceptional impact absorption
  • 3D Guidance support system provides just enough adaptive support without making the shoe feel stiff or heavy
  • Lighterweight than its predecessors despite the higher stack height, aiding in more versatility and adaptability across different runs

Cons

  • May not feel supportive enough for severe overpronators or anyone who prefers more pronounced stability
  • High stack height and soft landings may be limiting during speed workouts

Is the GT-2000 Right For You? Other Options to Consider

If you’re looking for a daily training shoe that offers versatility, support, and cushioning, you can’t go wrong with the new GT-2000 from Asics.

But as we mentioned before, not every shoe is the right fit for every walker or runner. Runners who need a bit more support, cushioning, or who are just looking for some alternative options may want to consider a few other models.

More and more running shoes are blurring the line between neutral and stability shoes, with models such as the GT-2000 offering a more adaptive support method that won’t overcorrect.

There are a lot of benefits to this flexible stability. But runners who need a touch more support may want to try another option. The Brooks Adrenaline GTS offers a more traditional stability shoe feel, with medial and lateral GuideRail technology and a firmer foam for inherent stability.

Those who prioritize softness and flexibility may prefer the GT-2000, but the Adrenaline offers a solid alternative for those who want extra reinforcement.

The Asics GT-2000 excels in its versatility, but on days when you want even more plush cushioning for maximum comfort, the Asics Gel-Kayano 33 is up for the task. This Asics shoe uses a high cushion design with its new FLUIDSUPPORT technology to blend softness and stability. It’s heavier than the GT-2000, but offers more protective, luxurious landings over the course of long runs or recovery days.

The Finish Line: Asics GT-2000 Final Thoughts and Recommendations

The GT-2000 has undergone lots of changes over the years. From the heavy early designs with a rigid plastic midfoot support to the more modern, lightweight design with subtle stability, the GT-2000 has incorporated new, innovative technologies with each new upgrade.

However, while the tech and materials have changed, the model itself has been a constant in reliability, comfort, and support. The GT-2000 15 brings this comfort to the next level with even more cushioning, softer landings, and a lighter weight than before. We put all these features to the test and found lots to love over the course of uptempo runs, daily miles, long runs, casual walks around town, and more.

Choosing a running shoe isn’t always easy, but at Marathon Sports, we’re here to make the process simpler. We hope this guide offers some insight into whether the GT-2000 could be the right fit for you, but the best way to confirm is with a visit to your local Marathon Sports
