The Specter Elite is Topo’s first carbon plated super shoe. Carbon plated racing shoes have become increasingly common in recent years, beginning with the Nike Vaporfly 4% in 2017. Since then, more brands have produced fast and propulsive racing shoes. Now, we’re excited to see a distinctive brand like Topo throw its hat in the ring.

A Closer Look at Topo’s First Racing Shoe
Despite being less established in the running shoe industry, Topo has made a name for itself with natural barefoot-inspired products. But with the Specter family, the brand is transitioning to high-performance shoes focused on speed, propulsion, and energy.
Our review team members were already big fans of the Topo Specter 3, so we were excited to take a closer, in-depth look at the Specter’s race-day counterpart and all the features it offers.
RevFoam ATPU Midsole
Topo introduced the new ATPU RevFoam midsole cushioning in the Specter 3, and we were happy to see this novel foam make a comeback in the Specter Elite.
Like standard PEBA racing foams, ATPU foam is incredibly lightweight and springy. However, RevFoam’s makeup is also more resilient than traditional racing foam, so you can enjoy the bounce and energy return it offers for even more miles.
With a 39/34 mm stack height, the Specter Elite also has lots of this bouncy foam underfoot to keep legs and feet feeling fresh, even towards the end of tough endurance races.
Carbon Fiber Plate
Within this ATPU midsole, you’ll find a stiff and aggressive carbon fiber plate.
The Specter Elite is Topo’s first carbon plated shoe, so we weren’t entirely sure what to expect with its feel and performance. But the carbon plate embedded in the midsole offered exceptional energy return and propulsion. It worked together with the dynamic foam to keep you moving forward, balancing out some of the midsole’s softness with added responsiveness and energy.
Midsole Shape and Geometry
Every element of the Specter Elite is designed to propel you forward, including the shoe’s geometry. An aggressive, pronounced rocker design improves forward momentum, offering smooth, effortless transitions with each step.
Racing shoes can occasionally feel unstable underfoot due to the high stack height and bouncy foam. Luckily, the Specter Elite avoids this issue with an inherently stable midsole design. The wide, flared base and high sidewalls provide effective support and comfort as you race through any distance.
Lightweight Mesh Upper
The Topo Specter is only 7.1 oz for men’s shoes and 5.6 oz for women’s, which is remarkably lightweight considering the shoe’s high stack height. This ultra-light design is, in part, a result of the lightweight engineered mesh upper that hugs the foot.
The upper is structured and breathable, with a touch of added padding in the heel to keep you secure and locked in place as you move. A minimal racer-style tongue also reduces excess weight and bulk.
Overall Fit
Topo shoes take inspiration from natural, barefoot-style shoes. With that, there are a few key elements found in every Topo shoe. First is a low, natural heel-to-toe offset, typically between 0-5 mm. Next is a wide, anatomical toe box.
Like every model from the brand, the Specter Elite incorporates both of these features. Along with its 5 mm drop, the shoe has a wide, spacious toe box that allows feet to move and swell over the course of long runs.
Outside of this wide toe box, the Specter Elite fits pretty true-to-size. The length runs as expected, and the heel and midfoot have a snug fit that hugs the feet and prevents any distracting rubbing or hot spots.
Longevity and Durability
The bad news with any dedicated racing shoe is that you won’t get as much mileage out of them compared to more durable daily trainers. Similarly, the Specter Elite’s lightweight design will break down faster than everyday workhorse shoes.
However, compared to other race day shoes, the Specter Elite does take some crucial steps to help you enjoy all these features for longer. ATPU foam can withstand more miles than some other race day foams, so you won’t lose out on bounce and energy return as fast.
A durable rubber outsole also helps reduce early wear while enhancing grip and traction across wet or varied surfaces.
Road Test Results: How Does the Specter Elite Perform?
Over the years, we’ve loved seeing newer brands expand their lineup, establish innovative new technology, and build a following in the running shoe world. In recent years, we’ve seen Topo do exactly that. Each new update and model is more exciting and advanced than the last, and we were eager to see how this innovation came together in the brand’s first racing shoe.
Sliding the shoe on for the first time, it’s impossible not to notice Topo’s distinct fit. The wide toe box made a great first impression, and we appreciated the extra wiggle room in the anatomical forefoot. And while the shoes fit roomy in the front, a contoured arch and midfoot gave us the snug, secure, locked-in feel expected in a high-performance racing shoe.
The Specter Elite is built for speed, so our first test was an uptempo run with some speedy intervals. The combination of ATPU foam and carbon plate made these faster intervals feel fun, dynamic, and effortless. The shoe had plenty of softness underfoot without sacrificing the responsiveness and energy return we need to pick up the pace.
And on longer mileage and everyday runs, the Specter Elite was just as comfortable. The high stack height kept legs feeling fresh after miles and miles of wear. So while this shoe could work for any uptempo run or race, our review team found that it would really excel during uptempo half-marathon or marathon efforts.
Ultimately, no matter the effort, pace level, or distance, our review team was incredibly impressed with Topo’s first segue into the carbon plated racing shoe game. The Specter Elite was fun to run in, and kept us looking forward to the next time we could lace them up and hit the road, which is really all you can ask for in a racing shoe.
Carbon plated shoes tend to offer an aggressive and propulsive ride, and the Specter Elite is no different. However, our team found that across all different paces and distances, the Specter Elite felt more accessible than some other racing shoes, offering stability and versatility that many super shoes lack.
In general, we didn’t have too many complaints, especially when cruising through faster intervals or tempo runs. The wide base and aggressive rocker profile kept the shoe feeling both propulsive and stable, although we could see the flared platform feeling a bit too bulky for runners who prefer a more agile, streamlined construction.
The upper also has a bit of structure and rigidity to it. This added structure isn’t necessarily a bad thing, and many members of our review team appreciated the extra support. However, we could see the upper material feeling a little too stiff for some runners, especially when paired with minimal padding along the tongue and top of the foot.
Topo shoes have become known for their barefoot-inspired, foot-shaped design and natural feel, and we couldn’t be happier to see this unique construction make its way into a road racing shoe. We think anyone who wants to try a carbon shoe but wants more stability and width than many of them offer could find their perfect fit with the new Topo Specter Elite.
Topo Specter Elite: Pros and Cons
So far, the shoes in Topo’s Pro Series have been fun, energetic, and dynamic to run in. As a brand new model, we didn’t have many preconceived notions about the Specter Elite, but our road test showed it may be a real competitor in the racing shoe market.
But even with all the positives, there are a few potential downsides to keep in mind. Here’s a summary of the pros and cons we encountered with the Topo Specter Elite.

Specter Elite vs the Competition: How Does it Compare?
The Specter Elite may be the first of its kind from Topo, but carbon plated racing shoes have become increasingly popular in recent years. Countless running shoe brands have joined in on the fun, and there are a lot of options to choose from in this category.
The Specter Elite does separate itself from the pack due to its distinct wide toe box and more stable construction. If you prefer a more spacious, accommodating fit or want a versatile, more resilient race day shoe, the Specter Elite is a top choice.
However, with an increasingly saturated market, there are a few other options that may be worth comparing when you’re looking for your next running shoe.
If you need a wide toe box in your racing shoe, check out the Vanish Carbon 2 from Altra. Like Topo, Altra shoes have a roomy, footshaped toe box for full freedom of movement. Altra’s EGO FOAM midsole is also lightweight and responsive for maximum comfort on race day.
The biggest difference stems from the heel-to-toe offset. The Vanish Carbon 2 has a balanced, 0-drop midsole, keeping your feet completely level, while the Specter Elite has a natural 5 mm drop. Those who prefer a flatter construction may want to go with Altra, while anyone who wants some extra padding and protection in the heel should consider the Topo.
Throughout our runs, our team also drew comparisons to a fan favorite racing shoe, the Hoka Cielo X1 3.0. Both shoes have an aggressive rocker geometry, snappy carbon fiber plate, and propulsive ride.
While the Cielo X1 has more overall cushioning and plushness than the Specter Elite, it also has less stability with each step. Those looking for secure, stable landings in their racing shoes may want to steer clear of the Cielo X1’s high PEBA platform.
