At Marathon Sports, Global Running Day is one of our favorite days of the year. Taking place the first Wednesday in June, Global Running Day is a celebration of all things movement and the sport of running.
Our mission is to keep people moving in comfort and help them find all the tools they need to reach their fitness goals. So it’s easy to understand why our team loves an annual holiday like Global Running Day that encourages people to get outside and get moving.
Everyone has their own approach to celebrating Global Running Day. Some people go out and join a planned celebration, while others may want to simply reflect on their miles and achievements over the years. No runner is the same, and Global Running Day is a fantastic way to honor runners and walkers of all ages, ability levels, and experience.
But no matter where you are in your running journey, you don’t have to celebrate the day on your own. Wondering how you can celebrate Global Running day? Here are some of the best ways to celebrate in your area or with the larger global running community.

Get Some Miles In
No surprise, one of the top ways to celebrate Global Running Day is to go for a run.
Check out a new route, strip away the technology and run music and watch free, or simply stick to your usual routine and enjoy your daily miles. There’s no wrong way to get a run in – as long as you’re getting out there and finding joy in the sport.
Join a Virtual or In-Person 5K
Even better than taking on a Running Day workout on your own? Running alongside local runners in your area or even the international running community.
No matter where you are, there are plenty of local races either on Global Running Day or on the weekends surrounding it that allow you to get outside, push yourself, and see a huge range of friendly faces that share your passion.
And if you want to be part of a worldwide movement to stay active and have fun on Global Running Day, check out the NYRR Virtual 5K and running challenge. This Virtual 5K gives you the option to run a 5K wherever you most love running, anytime between May 31st and June 8th. There’s even a Kids Can Run Too event to inspire the young runners in your life to run and stay active with you.
Treat Yourself to Some New Running Gear
There’s no better day than Global Running Day to treat yourself to a run-inspired shopping day.
Swing by your nearest run specialty store to check out some stylish and functional summer running apparel, cozy moisture-wicking running socks, recovery tools, and more. You can also make sure you can keep running pain and injury-free with a personalized fitting for your perfect running shoe.
Join a Local Run Club

At Marathon Sports, our team loves the support, camaraderie, and community that comes with run clubs. And you can be a part of this welcoming running community by joining a group run in your area.
Throughout New England, a huge range of Marathon Sports locations will be hosting Global Running Day events and group runs to help encourage runners to get up, get moving, and become a part of the local running community. Here are a few events you can take part in this Wednesday, June 3rd:

From the Cape to Western Mass to NH, CT, and beyond, our team members are always excited to have you join us at our local run clubs. Swing by your nearest store or give your local Marathon Sports a call with any questions or to see if there are any celebrations near you. You can also check out our full events calendar for more information.
Encourage a New Runner
Have someone in your life that’s been thinking about running, but hasn’t quite made that leap yet? For Global Running Day, invite them to join you for some of your mileage.
Running is always more fun with a friend, so encourage someone in your life to get outside and move with you, no matter what the distance is or how fast you go. And you never know – it may be the push they need to keep it up and start picking up their running shoes more often.
Give Back to the Running Community
While we suggest getting miles in if you can on Global Running Day, we also know it’s not always possible. But whether you’re dealing with an injury or have other reasons for not being able to get a run in, you don’t need to completely sit out of the Running Day festivities.
Here are a few ways you can give back for Global Running Day:
- Volunteer at a local race: Hand out waters or just cheer on other runners at a race near you.
- Volunteer or learn more about a running-focused organization or non-profit: Organizations like Girls on the Run and more are focused on making running more accessible and ensuring everyone can enjoy the benefits and happiness that comes with running. If you’re able to, spend some time researching running non-profits near you and see if there’s a way you can help make a difference
- Donate old running shoes: Marathon Sports accepts gently worn sneakers to help reduce waste and ensure everyone has access to a good pair of running shoes. If you have any running shoes you don’t wear anymore, drop them off at your nearest store to help us with this goal
The running community has done so much for each and every one of our team members at Marathon Sports, and we’re incredibly thankful we get to get outside, explore our communities, and run with so many of you.
If you feel the same way, try giving back this Global Running Day by volunteering, donating old shoes and gear, or supporting the community in your own unique way.
Join an Online Conversation
Another way to join in on the fun is to share your running journey online. Share why you run, your favorite running memories, or what you’re currently training for.
Whether you’re able to get some miles in on Global Running Day or not, sharing your personal running story is a great way to connect with others and commemorate your running achievements over the years.
Global Running Day: Celebrate Your Way
These are just a few of the ways you can celebrate your running journey and commemorate with other runners in your community and around the world. But the truth is, there’s no wrong way to celebrate Global Running Day.
Try a new route, join a run club, run with friends, or simply take to the roads, trails, treadmill,or track and rack up some miles. No matter what you do on Wednesday, June 3rd, this annual holiday is a fantastic day to reflect back on your journey and celebrate the sport.
And if you’re not sure how to celebrate, your friends at Marathon Sports are always here to help! Take a look at our upcoming group runs and Global Running Day celebrations.
