Asics Superblast vs Asics Novablast Compared

When it comes to speedy and versatile all-around running shoes, Asics has built an impressive reputation. Founded back in 1949, the brand has always been a trusted and reliable favorite among runners and walkers. But with the release of even more speedy and well-loved trainers, Asics is establishing itself as a powerhouse in the running shoe game.

Asics is well-known for its established running shoe lines. But in more recent years, two versatile running shoes have built a major following – the Novablast and Superblast

These two versatile performance running shoes have a lot in common. Between their similar names, almost identical looks, and bouncy, all-around design, it’s easy to see how these two shoes have garnered lots of direct comparisons over the years. So how exactly do they differ, and which of these two shoes is right for your training?

While the two Asics running shoes may look similar on the surface, there are some key differences to keep in mind when you’re searching for your next running shoe. We’ll take a closer look at everything the Superblast 3 and Novablast 6 have to offer to help you make the best and most informed choice possible to meet your running needs.

Asics Superblast 3 vs Novablast 6: A Quick Overview

Before we dive into the nitty-gritty technical details, let’s take a closer look at the two shoes for a better understanding of who might benefit from each option.

The Asics Novablast, now on its 6th iteration, was designed as a light and bouncy daily trainer that can tackle everything from long runs to uptempo workouts. It’s one of Asics’ newer models, but the exciting and dynamic design has quickly made it one of the most popular trainers in the brand’s lineup.

The Asics Superblast debuted even more recently than the Novablast, and the shoe is only on its third iteration. But the Superblast 3 has quickly proven itself as a top choice when it comes to cushioned, high-performance shoes. The premium layered midsole, high stack height, and bouncy and responsive feel make the Superblast 3 excel on faster-paced runs and long-run days, while the cushioned design allows for even more versatility.

It’s evident that both shoes boast a versatile design and dynamic and responsive landings. However, at $155, the Novablast 6 is an affordable everyday option for runners looking for a soft yet responsive shoe that can do it all.

At $210, the Superblast 3 offers a top-of-the-line option that will likely serve you best if you’re looking for a designated high-performance shoe.

Despite the shoes both working for a variety of runs, when you take a closer look at the key details and features, there are a few aspects that set the Superblast and Novablast apart. Keep reading for a closer look at all these features and better insight into which of these two Asics favorites is right for you.

Superblast 3 vs Novablast 6: Midsole Unit and Cushioning

When you’re browsing new running shoes, one of the most important features to consider is the midsole unit. And when it comes to both the Superblast 3 and Novablast 6, the exciting and energetic cushioning is a huge part of what makes the two models so successful.

The Superblast 3 features a dual layer of FF Leap and FF Blast Plus foam. The top layer of premium FF Leap foam offers an ultra light and soft feel directly underfoot, while the FF Blast Plus foam layer closer to the ground adds extra liveliness and durability.

The premium foam isn’t the only aspect that gives the Superblast 3 its signature comfort and bounce. The shoe features a whopping 47 mm of cushioning in the heel and 39 mm in the midfoot, creating a high-cushion feel that offers plenty of shock absorption and unparalleled comfort in each step. And even with the high stack height, the layers of premium foam ensure the shoe doesn’t sacrifice any rebound and energy return on speedy runs.

The Novablast 6 still features plenty of cushioning – a 41.5/33.5 mm stack height for men’s shoes and 40.5/32.5 mm stack height for women’s – although it doesn’t have quite the same towering midsole unit as the Superblast 3.

The full FF Blast Max cushioning also offers a significantly different feel than the stiffer, more responsive dual-layer Superblast midsole. This unique, balanced midsole foam is softer than ever, offering more plush and luxurious comfort in every step.

Despite the softer feel, this daily trainer maintains the trampoline-like bounce and responsiveness that drew runners to the shoe in the first place. The new FF TURBO SQUARED trampoline pod in the forefoot delivers even more of this bounce, driving responsive toe offs comparable to the Superblast.

Superblast 3 vs Novablast 6: Upper and Fit

When you first slide a shoe on for the first time, the upper design and material are responsible for the immediate step-in comfort and response. And throughout a long run, you want an upper that feels soft, comfortable, and breathable. So let’s take a look at how the upper and all-around fit compares on these two shoes.

The Superblast 3 uses an engineered woven upper to comfortably wrap the foot. This material is soft and flexible for extra comfort, while the padding along the heel collar adds additional plushness. The gusseted tongue wing fit system also provides a secure and customized midfoot fit to prevent any excess movement on runs.

The Superblast is all about being light and speedy, and the lightweight upper contributes to this fast, light-on-your-feet construction. On the other hand, the Novablast 6 is more focused on comfort and cushioning, and this is evident in the shoe’s upper design.

The Novablast’s engineered woven upper is thicker and more padded than the Superblast 3’s upper, offering more all-around softness and comfort. This stretchy, breathable material, paired with extra padding around the heel, creates a luxurious, cushioned feel around every part of the foot.

Most Asics shoes fit relatively narrow, and both the Superblast 3 and Novablast 6 are no exception. However, the stretchy, flexible upper on both shoes does offer a slightly more accommodating fit. In terms of length, both shoes fit true-to-size. The Novablast 6 is also available in a wide width option.

Superblast 3 vs Novablast 6: Overall Design

Along with all the technical details, there are a few key overall design elements to consider when deciding between these two shoes.

Both shoes are remarkably lightweight, especially considering how much cushioning they have. However, the Superblast 3 is slightly lighter, with the unisex sizing weighing in at 8.5 oz. In comparison, the men’s Novablast 6 weighs in at 8.8 oz. The women’s Novablast 6 is slightly lighter than the Unisex Superblast, coming in at 7.7 oz.

The close weight isn’t where the similarities end. Both shoe models also feature a balanced 8 mm drop, a geometric midsole design for a more energetic ride, and a neutral construction that doesn’t provide additional correction for overpronators.

Although both shoes are neutral, the Superblast’s wider base and stiffer feel offer some more inherent stability on landings than the softer Novablast 6. And while a rocker design is present in both the Novablast and Superblast, the speedier Superblast does have a more pronounced forefoot rocker to guide you forward.

Superblast 3 vs Novablast 6: Durability and Grip

Flipping the two shoes over, you’ll find another key comparison point between the Superblast and Novablast: outsole design.

Both shoes rely on the brand’s proprietary ASICSGRIP outsole for more durability and traction. This tough, grippy rubber adds some extra traction on dirt, rocks, gravel, and other tough surfaces while also increasing the lifespan of the shoe.

The Novablast also takes an additional step to increase grip and durability, adding AHAR LO rubber in high wear areas of the shoe. This helps reduce early wear and compression, adding an additional layer of protection as you put in mileage.

Superblast 3 vs Novablast 6: Price and Value

The Superblast 3 is a step up in cushioning and performance from the Novablast 6, and the price definitely reflects that. While the Novablast 6 rings up at $155, the Superblast 3 comes in at $210.

So is this price difference actually worth it?

The answer comes down to what you’re looking for in your running shoes. If you’re looking for an affordable everyday trainer that you can carry over into faster runs, the Novablast 6 is a fantastic option. The soft and versatile shoe can easily take on everything from long runs to everyday miles to uptempo workouts. However, some runners may find it too soft and unstable for faster workouts.

If you’re looking for a premium, high-performance shoe, you may find the Superblast 3 worth the extra cost. The shoe is more stable and responsive than the Novablast, offering even more versatility on any type of run or workout. While it shines on uptempo long runs and even races, this dynamic shoe can handle whatever you throw at it, whether it’s a speed workout, daily miles, intervals, and so much more.

Who Should Consider Buying Each Shoe?

The Asics Superblast 3 and Novablast 6 are two of the most exciting and well-loved shoes from the Asics lineup, and after testing them both out in a direct comparison, it’s easy to see why these two models have earned a spot at the top.

Both shoes are incredibly lightweight and versatile, with lots of well-balanced cushioning to keep you comfortable on any type of run. And while both shoes can handle a huge variety of workouts, we found that their strong points differed.

The Novablast 6 works best as a daily trainer for anyone who prefers a soft and bouncy underfoot feel. The $155 price point is standard for moderate-to-high cushion shoes, and the versatility makes it a great option for any runner looking for one shoe that can do it all. However, anyone who wants a touch of extra stability and stiffness for uptempo runs or race day may find the Novablast 6 too soft.

In comparison, the Superblast 3 is built for uptempo runs of any distance. The high stack height may make the shoe feel too blocky in speed workouts for some runners, but the max cushion feel is balanced out with the dual-layer cushioning and exceptional energy return. If you’re open to paying a little extra for a premium running shoe, you can’t go wrong with this high-performance option.
