Mount to Coast H1 Review: A Road-to-Trail Star

Hybrid shoes are truly having their moment in the running shoe world. More and more walkers and runners are seeking shoes with light traction that can carry them from road to trails with ease and comfort. And with this growing demand, more brands are diving into the hybrid running shoe category.

Some well-known, well-established brands have gotten in on the road-to-trail action, including Hoka and Altra. But one of the best options in the game actually comes from a smaller, lesser-known company – a relatively new brand called Mount to Coast

Mount to Coast has only been around since 2024. However, it quickly established itself as a major player in the road and trail scene, delivering comfortable and durable shoes meant to handle any distance. And with the H1, the brand successfully bridged the gap between road and trail with a versatile hybrid shoe option.

The Marathon Sports Review Process

The H1 is a new shoe model from a relatively new brand, so our review team couldn’t wait to dive in, lace up the shoe, and learn more about this all-terrain shoe.

Over the course of different types of runs, across all different terrains, we learned all there is to know about the features and design elements in the H1. We dove into the technology and did some hands-on testing on roads, gravel, trails, and more to determine how the H1 stacks up.

And if you have any questions about this new shoe, we’re here to help. We’ll summarize all our key findings and compare the H1 to some of the other top hybrid shoes on the market. By the end of this review, you should have a better understanding of whether or not the H1 is the perfect road-to-trail shoe to add to your closet.

Mount to Coast H1: The Nitty Gritty Details

Now that you have a better picture of the H1 fundamentals, let’s dive into all the key details that make it excel from smooth roads to rugged trails.

Sustainable CircleCELL Midsole

The H1 blends performance, sustainability, and comfort in its unique CircleCELL midsole foam. This supercritical foam shares a similar bounce and responsiveness to more traditional PEBA foams, although Mount to Coast boasts nearly double the life expectancy.

The moderate 35/29 mm stack height of this foam provides enough cushioning to keep your legs and feet feeling fresh on the road, all without sacrificing comfort and stability when you take to the trails.

And one of the best parts? This durable, high-performance foam is made entirely from renewable, sustainable materials. With this bio-based CircleCELL foam, Mount to Coast proves that you can seamlessly integrate sustainable materials and renewable energy into a durable, comfortable, and high-performing midsole foam.

Adaptable VersaGrip Outsole

While the midsole delivers on comfort and responsiveness, traction and grip is one of the most important aspects when it comes to creating a good versatile road-to-trail shoe.

We’re happy to share that the Mount to Coast H1 also excels in this category. The VersaGrip outsole provides the traction you need to move through trails in confidence, without sacrificing any comfort and softness underfoot.

The 2mm lugs are pretty minimal, especially compared to other more technical trail shoes. But while the outsole and lugs may not be geared to the most rugged trails out there, they’ll provide the security and grip you need to stay safe and confident as you move from road to gravel to trail.

TUNEDFIT Dual Lacing System

Mount to Coast’s TUNEDFIT Dual Lacing design is another unique feature that sets the H1 apart as a comfortable and reliable hybrid shoe. This dual lacing system allows you to adjust the lacing around the midfoot and forefoot separately for a more customized fit.

Feet swell or change over long hours standing or moving, and this lacing system was designed with this in mind. You can easily adjust the fit around the top or bottom of the foot to ensure as much comfort and support as possible throughout runs or walks.

Woven Upper and Overall Fit

The H1’s upper is made from jacquard and high-performance woven material, and is enhanced with aramid fibers for extra durability.

The reinforced woven design is incredibly tough and durable, so you can move through rocks and debris without worrying about rips or early wear around the top of the foot. And with a lightweight rubber toe bumper, you can enjoy extra security no matter where your runs take you.

Overall, the H1 fits true to size. However, the upper construction works with the dual lacing system to securely wrap the foot and provide as snug or as roomy of a fit as you prefer. While the toe box has some extra width and volume, the elastic lacing on the bottom allows you to adjust the fit to your needs and preferences.

Durability and Value

If you’re looking for a shoe that can truly do it all, you won’t be disappointed with the H1. This shoe is incredibly versatile, and can easily be your companion throughout any type of run, on any type of terrain.

At $160, it also offers exceptional value for your money in a running shoe. With long lasting foam and a reliable outsole, you can expect the H1 to keep you comfortable for miles and miles of wear.

Mount to Coast H1: Road and Trail Testing Results

For a hybrid shoe like the H1, our review team couldn’t just do our standard road testing. We needed to try out the shoe on every terrain we could find to see how the durability, grip, and comfort truly hold up across different runs. So we laced up the H1 and did exactly that, crossing over from road to gravel to dirt paths and both light and technical trails.

The good news is that the H1 truly delivers the versatility and adaptability Mount to Coast promises. The moderate stack of CircleCELL foam felt great underfoot no matter where our runs took us. On roads, it felt soft yet responsive enough to absorb shock and keep us comfortable. And as we took to the trails, it felt perfectly stable, supportive, and well-balanced underfoot.

We did notice a pronounced rocker geometry, which did a great job propelling us forward and providing lots of toe spring through each stride. Paired with the low 6 mm drop, our review team really enjoyed the smooth and natural ride the H1 offers.

The outsole design and light lugs were another big plus. The VersaGrip outsole provided plenty of grip and traction without being distracting or making the shoe feel too stiff. As we moved from road to gravel to trail, this lightweight outsole provided fantastic traction without being too aggressive or unnatural underfoot.

However, runners looking for a shoe built to handle more technical terrain may run into some challenges with the H1. The minimal outsole is ideal for gravel or more packed trails, but our review team found that it didn’t quite hold up as well on more mountainous terrain with lots of elevation changes. The H1 is incredibly versatile, but if you’re looking for a more technical trail shoe, you may want to consider a different option.

H1 Pros and Cons

Throughout our road-to-trail testing, our team uncovered lots to love about the H1. But no shoe is perfect for every runner, and there are always some upsides and downsides to consider when shopping around for shoes.

Here are some pros and cons with the H1 to keep in mind:

Pros:

  • Incredibly versatile – adaptable outsole can tackle roads, light trails, and more
  • Sustainable CircleCELL foam is well-balanced and responsive for a smooth and comfortable ride
  • One of the most durable shoes around. Foam, outsole, and upper are all built to last and hold up well over miles and miles of wear
  • TUNEDFIT Dual Lacing system allows for a customizable fit that can accommodate more foot shapes and sizes

Cons:

  • Minimal outsole can be slippery on mud or more technical terrains
  • Dual lacing system can be polarizing and may not work well for everyone

Who Should Consider the H1?

The H1 is a great option for any runner looking for a single shoe that can handle both roads and trails. If you prioritize versatility and want one main training shoe that can do it all, the workhorse H1 is up for the challenge.

Overall, the H1 excels on roads, gravel, or light trails. But runners or hikers looking for a dedicated trail shoe for more rugged terrain should consider trying out the Mount to Coast T1 instead. Like the H1, the T1 offers bouncy and stable cushioning and a customizable fit. But with a grippier, more aggressive Vibram outsole, you can enjoy maximum traction on trails.

Runners looking for other all-terrain options should try comparing the Mount to Coast H1 to the Hoka Challenger 8. Like the H1, the Challenger is built to narrow the gap between road and trail running shoes. Both offer lots of soft cushioning, a durable outsole with mild lugs, and a breathable and comfortable upper. However, as a shoe geared for ultra runners, the H1 will likely offer more long-term durability across all your road and off-road exploration.

Mount to Coast H1: Final Thoughts

Both trail and road running are becoming more and more popular, driving a need for shoes that can serve as a go-to for any type of run. With the H1, Mount to Coast offers a fantastic versatile option that can carry you over nearly any type of terrain in comfort.

The midsole excels on long runs or daily mileage on the road, offering a responsive, high-performing foam and rocker geometry to keep you moving forward. As you head off-road, the durable and grippy outsole comes into play, keeping you safe and secure throughout runs or walks.

Our review team was impressed with our experiences running and walking in the H1. But over the years at Marathon Sports, we’ve seen how different and personal the right running shoe fit is. So if you’re wondering if the H1 is right for you, the next step is to swing by your nearest Marathon Sports and try them out for yourself.

Our footwear experts will guide you through the Right Fit process to help you decide what type of shoe will work best for you and your needs. Armed with the right pair of shoes, whether it’s a road shoe, trail shoe, or something in between, you’ll be ready to tackle any outdoor adventure.
