Position Description:
The Director of Finance serves as the President’s strategic business partner. This position requires
a strong leader passionate about finance, technology, business growth, and process improvement.
The position will work directly for the President of Marathon while reporting indirectly to the
Onward Outdoor Brands (OOB) Sr. Director of Finance. In addition to supporting management with
strategic financial analysis to inform business decisions, the Director will protect and maximize
returns on financial assets by establishing internal controls and ensuring adherence to accounting
policies. This position will be accountable for all aspects of the business’s day-to-day financial
accounting and will contribute to operational efficiency.
The ideal candidate will have experience at growth companies with revenues under $100m, a
retail industry background, and experience with multi-location inventory and distribution.
Responsibilities:
Financial Reporting and Controls
- Develop, implement, and monitor all financial controls and operating procedures, working
closely with the OOB Accounting/Finance team to ensure alignment for consolidation. - Ensure accounting transactions, results, and reports align with GAAP and company policies
while meeting month-end close deadlines. Collaborate with the OOB Controller team. Manage a staff of three accounting/accounts payable associates. - Provide variance analysis commentary to be utilized in board reporting.
- Communicate financial results effectively to leaders and other key stakeholders.
- Deliver ongoing reporting enhancements to improve visibility and accessibility of financial
data across the organization. - Provide support to external auditors as needed for the annual audit
- Own sales tax reporting/payment and collaborate with the tax department to ensure tax
compliance for income and other taxes.
Budgeting and Forecasting:
- Lead the FP&A function, ensuring budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis processes
are efficient, accurate, and aligned with operational and strategic priorities. Responsibilities include managing budget templates, training stakeholders, consolidating submissions, and preparing leadership materials that connect financial plans to company goals. - Analyze and communicate business trends and performance metrics to influence strategy.
- Develop dashboards and analytics to support key business questions and executive
decision-making. - Support the business’s financial strategy and decision-making processes, including
preparing ad-hoc reports, financial models, and process documentation.
Strategic Planning:
- Assist the President with strategic planning and a 3-year financial model.
- Measure performance against business objectives and translate trends into action.
- Lead financial modeling and due diligence for M&A opportunities and other ad hoc
business ventures.
Operations:
Act as a financial advisor to the team.
- Support financial literacy by educating managers on financials, budgets and KPIs.
- Collaborate with operations staff to implement efficient business processes and record-
keeping to allow Marathon Sports to meet business objectives. - Responsible for the accounting related to the annual stock count and related reserves for
inventories. Process documentation for inventory flows. - Manage all product costing and inventory valuation processes within QuickBooks (or
NetSuite) in accordance with OOB requirements & policies. - Provide support for insurance renewals and event certificates of insurance.
Information Technology (IT):
- Lead technology initiatives across the organization.
- Lead system integrations, as needed.
- Evaluate existing systems and alternatives. Recommend system enhancements to support
company strategy. - Maintain and enhance warehouse, inventory, and pricing tools
- Manage a staff of 1 IT professional.
Qualifiers:
- Bachelor’s and/or Master’s degree in Accounting or Finance
- CPA license preferred
- 7-10 years of experience in an accounting/finance/operations role; retail experience a plus
- Strong understanding of standards, practices, and procedures of GAAP accounting
- Strong analytical skills, business acumen, and judgment
- Critical thinking and problem-solving skills
- Proficient in Microsoft Excel (NetSuite a plus)
- High attention to detail
- Deadline-driven, flexible, and adaptable
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- On-site presence expected
