How to Plan for the Weather when Running

Ah, New England. Whether we like it or not, there’s bound to be some unpredictable weather headed our way. But don’t let it get in the way of your fitness goals! With some easy wardrobe adjustments, you’ll be out there sweating while everyone else is sitting on the couch.

So how do you keep it moving when the temperature drops? By LAYERING!

HOW DO YOU USE LAYERING TO STAY WARM?

It’s also important to remember that you should AVOID wearing cotton while exercising outdoors, especially in the fall and winter. Here’s two major reasons why:

-Cotton is highly absorbent, which means it’s going to take any moisture – whether from sweat or precipitation – and hold it against your skin. Brrr!! A poly or wool blend will wick that moisture right off your skin before you have a chance to get cold.

-Cotton doesn’t have much stretch. In order to trap heat and insulate your core, your shirt should be snug fitting and stretchy. This will keep heat in and keep windchill out. A shirt knit with a poly or wool blend gives four-way stretch for a perfect fit.

You’d be surprised to find that two relatively thin layers keep you so much warmer than a thick cotton hoodie!
