No matter what distance you're running you want to relax and zone out, but you also want to feel good and look good. No one wants to feel chafing or pain anywhere when you're running, unless it's the hurt you're inflicting on all those runners you're passing.


According to Moving Comfort, more than 50% of women report feeling pain in their breasts while running. Running with pain anywhere on or in your body can be as annoying as the waiter at whichever chain restaurant who irritatingly sits down with you and your friends in your already overstuffed booth and amiably chats with you like you’re besties.


A more supportive, better fitting sports bra is like having your best friend at the table fix the situation with the waiter. The friend who can say things with unabashed ease, like “how about not crowding our personal space and taking our orders while standing like a normal waiter?”


Moving Comfort also says 8 of 10 women are wearing a poor fitting bra. If you're in that category because you were overwhelmed with choices or you didn't want a strange sales woman to grab your chest, rest assured we have some helpful reminders and tips that should help you on your next trip to the store. And also, there's no grabbing, just measuring.


Remember, everyone is different and each bra has been designed with different activities in mind. Running is a strenuous activity and therefore, you should opt for the more supportive, but still comfortable bra.


  • No fitting process is foolproof, but there are tips for getting the best fit.


  • Bands are the most important components of a well-fitting bra
    • The bottom band, not the straps, offers most of the support. 
    • The band should feel more snug than lingerie bra, but not tight enough to keep you from comfortably taking a deep breath.
    • If your bra has an underwire it should sit flat on your ribcage. No poking or pinching. 


  • Cups: be sure to scoop yourself into each cup
    • Both breasts should be centered and level, and not bulge out of the   neckline.


  • A bra with customizable straps will offer a more customizable fit
    • Fit to the larger breast - if you have one - and adjust the strap accordingly.
    • The more rigid the strap, the more supportive the bra.


Compression and Encapsulation

  • Think of a compression bra as the clingy first date who texted you for weeks and eventually won you over. This bra only offers compression against your chest to limit movement.
  • Compression is best for A and B cups.
  • Think of encapsulation bras as the reliable personal assistant or baby sitter who remembers everything - not all women need them, but they can make life much easier.
  • Encapsulation bras support each breast separately, thus are more supportive and are a better fit for D cups and larger.
  • Most everyday bras are encapsulation bras.
  • Bras are also available that offer a combination of both compression and encapsulation.


Avoid injury

  • A pair of D cup breasts weigh15-23 pounds so it’s crucial to keep them supported.
  • In an hour of exercise a pair of 34DD breasts will move 1,000 vertical feet. We just included this fact because it was impressive to us.


Keep them fresh, the bra that is

  • Replace your sports bras every 6-12 months because dirt and bacteria can build up and that's gross
  • Ideally, you'll have three bras in rotation, one your using, a dirty one on the floor you'll get to later, and one hanging dry


Double check your fit

  • Run in place or jump up and down in the fitting room.
  • Don't worry about feeling silly, you have a whole store of people sitting with their pants rolled up to their knees outside.
