Back in April, Marathon Sports entered uncharted waters with a new partnership. Together with adidas and the Boston Athletic Association, we opened the Boston Marathon® adidas RunBase at 855 Boylston Street. This store is the first of its kind in America and only the sixth worldwide.
Equal parts museum, running store, and runner’s clubhouse, RunBase is truly a one-of-a-kind experience. When you walk in, you quickly realize that this is no ordinary adidas store.
Surrounding the array of product for sale – adidas Boost running shoes, adidas Supernova running apparel, and adidas Beyond the Run lifestyle apparel are a variety of Boston Marathon® artifacts: the winner’s medal given back to the city by 2013 champion Lelisa Desisa; a One Fund singlet worn by a member of the 2014 fundraising team; a shadowbox depicting female trailblazers Bobbi Gibb and Kathrine Switzer; a variety of past years’ Boston Marathon® jackets.
In the middle of the store lies one of the most interesting pieces: a topographical map of the entire Boston course – many visitors are surprised to learn that the Boston Marathon® course, with all the hype and tales of woe surrounding the famed Heartbreak Hill, is actually a net downhill.
Once you tear yourself away from all the neat Boston Marathon® stuff, you’ll notice that RunBase has lockers and showers for the running public. Imagine how perfect this would be for a lunchtime or post-work run – no gym membership needed. Just drop your stuff in a locker and head out for a run in our beautiful and historic city. When you get back, hop in the shower and be on your way, whether it’s back to work or out to dinner.
After a few months under our belts at RunBase, we are starting to explore the incredible possibilities with a place like this. While we already have a Run Club (Thursday evenings at 6:30) and host the occasional free Yoga for Runners class (thanks to Back Bay Yoga’s Cara Gilman), we are beginning to plan some new, fun events.
